What Is Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy?
Ketamine assisted psychotherapy (KAP) is a treatment approach that utilizes the dissociative anesthetic ketamine to facilitate therapeutic breakthroughs in individuals struggling with conditions such as depression, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety disorders, and many others. Unlike traditional antidepressant medications, ketamine works by targeting the glutamate system in the brain, specifically the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors. By blocking these receptors and increasing the release of certain neurotransmitters, ketamine helps to rapidly alleviate symptoms and create a temporary state of increased neuroplasticity. This heightened neuroplasticity allows individuals to access and process difficult emotions and traumatic memories, enhancing the effectiveness of psychotherapy sessions.
